Acclaimed Nova Scotian Musician Steven Bowers Relocates to Edmonton

First show, Friday, Feb. 10 at Haven Social Club, joined by rapper A.O.K. [CLICK HERE FOR FACEBOOK EVENT]

For at least the next six months, Edmonton's folk and roots music scene will have a powerful new addition playing its venues. Steven Bowers, a singer, songwriter and award-winning producer, has transported himself from Nova Scotia, where he made five critically acclaimed recordings.

A two-time ECMA nominee (pop and folk categories) and two-time Producer of the Year recipient from MusicNS, Bowers is a captivating performer with a powerful, versatile voice. He has garnered a strong following throughout Atlantic Canada and is quickly gaining popularity across Canada and beyond.

Steven has been a featured performer at events such as Junofest, Canadian Music Week,  Stan Rogers Folk Festival, Atlantic Film Festival, MusicNS Bringin’ It Home Tours, ECMA Songwriter Circle and the Songwriter Association of Canada's "Bluebird North," among others.

He will be performing his first local show since relocating at the venerable Haven Social Club on Feb. 10, 2012. Doors open at 8:00 p.m., showtime at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

It's his second concert at the Haven, having played the venue in 2010 during a cross-Canada tour. The opening act — ME! — although an unlikely pairing, marks our five-year friendship.

Avenue Edmonton's winter guide this year is called "25 Reasons to Love Edmonton Winters" (Alternative title: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love Edmonton Winters). And I had a lot of fun writing this with the other editors.

My favourite reason to love winter? No. 12, Gruff Pride.

Admit it, you love the vigour that comes with bragging to a foreigner about how our winters make you rise early to start your car, or sometimes it just won’t start, or the key won’t fit, or windows won’t defrost or — on very special mornings — your car is gone from sight. You love it.

Read all 25 reasons here.

As always, Avenue Edmonton, the magazine where I am an associate editor, had its biggest issue of the year in November — the Top 40 Under 40. The list highlights the 40 brightest, most accomplished, most ambitious — and it just so happens, handsomest — Edmontonians under the age of 40. I wrote five of the 40 profies, which I've linked below, or you can read the entire issue here.

>> Todd Babiak, 39, Writer

>> Alexander Clark, 38, Professor And Associate Dean, Faculty Of Nursing, University Of Alberta

>> Jeff Johnston, 36, Industrial Designer

>> Cam Linke, 28, Co-Founder, Startup Edmonton

>> Karen McDonald, 32, Director Of Community Relations, Seniors Association Of Greater Edmonton
